Details

A Senior Software Engineer I owns the end-to-end execution of technical elements in the Booking.com technology stack, products, and processes. The role is responsible for implementing complex technical solutions based on business requirements, accurately estimating effort and impact, and delivering high-quality work. The engineer collaborates with colleagues across roles, mentors junior engineers, provides technical leadership, and may work on product features, infrastructure automation, frameworks, tooling, or services.

Responsibilities

  • Build software applications using relevant development languages, systems, services, and tools.
  • Write readable and reusable code using standard patterns and libraries.
  • Refactor and simplify code using appropriate design patterns.
  • Ensure application quality through standard testing techniques and methods aligned with the test strategy.
  • Maintain data security, integrity, and quality according to company standards and best practices.
  • Own services end to end, including monitoring application health and performance, setting metrics, and responding to violations.
  • Reduce business continuity risks and bus factor through appropriate practices, tools, documentation, runbooks, and OpDocs.
  • Use continuous delivery and experimentation frameworks to reduce risk and obtain customer feedback.
  • Manage applications and services through deployment and production operations.
  • Address and resolve live production issues within service-level agreements (SLAs), mitigate customer impact, and improve reliability through root-cause analysis.
  • Contribute to incident tracking and postmortem processes.
  • Evaluate architecture solutions while considering cost, business requirements, technology requirements, and emerging technologies.
  • Describe the implications of changing or adding systems and maintain a broad understanding of infrastructure and architecture.
  • Apply engineering techniques such as prototyping, spiking, and vendor evaluation.
  • Design solutions that meet current requirements and support future enhancements.
  • Advise product teams on technical solutions that meet functional, non-functional, and architectural requirements.
  • Provide architectural guidance, challenge application design rationale, and align target architecture improvements.
  • Coach, guide, and improve the performance of colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Apply critical and analytical thinking to identify underlying issues and develop solutions.
  • Identify and implement process, system, and structural improvements.
  • Communicate clearly with peers, product managers, managers, team members, and the developer community.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation when required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • 5–8 years of relevant job knowledge and advanced knowledge in the field.
  • Proficiency in building software applications.
