Senior Staff Data Engineer - Data Stewardship

Airbnb's Data Stewardship team is responsible for data governance, compliance, data modeling, scaled data quality, and helping data consumers identify the best data for their needs. The team supports the pipelines, programs, and policy bodies that enable these capabilities and is part of the Data Infrastructure organization.

Responsibilities

• Define the multi-year vision for data governance and data quality as Airbnb's global business and AI landscape evolve.
• Advise executive leadership on data governance and integrate compliance and stewardship into the data product lifecycle.
• Lead the design of data architectures that support batch, real-time, and AI-driven requirements.
• Define best practices, tooling, and organizational culture that enable data teams to maintain high-quality data autonomously.
• Lead cross-functional task forces involving Information Security, Legal, and Privacy to address regulatory requirements such as GDPR and the AI Act and translate them into engineering requirements.
• Coach Senior and Staff engineers across the organization on data best practices.
• Lead large-scale data initiatives across multiple departments or business units.
• Influence product and business strategy through data integrity.
• Drive cultural change regarding data ownership and quality across the engineering organization.

Requirements

• 12+ years of industry experience.
• Proven experience leading large-scale data initiatives across multiple departments or business units.
• Expertise designing and evolving complex data ecosystems in high-volume environments.
• Experience influencing product and business strategy through data integrity.
• Deep expertise in the Java, Scala, and Spark ecosystem.
• Preferably, knowledge of Amazon S3 and Apache Iceberg.
• Strong knowledge of relational databases and SQL query authoring.
• Ability to evaluate and introduce proven industry approaches and new technologies.
• Strong change-management and organizational-influence skills.

Work Location

This position is US remote eligible. The role may include occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites, as agreed with the manager. The employee must live in a state where Airbnb, Inc. has a registered entity.

Compensation

The base pay range is $248,000–$310,000 USD. The role may also be eligible for bonus, equity, benefits, and Employee Travel Credits.
