Senior Web Software Engineer, Data Science Prototyping

Airbnb's Data Science team partners with Design, Product, and Engineering across the product portfolio to apply sophisticated modeling techniques to critical problems and explore new ways to leverage science for the Airbnb community. Web prototypers work with Data Scientists to identify key questions and build software prototypes that help validate ideas, explore design questions, and demonstrate the potential of new data models.

Responsibilities

• Co-develop prototypes with Data Scientists by discussing proposed data models, identifying open questions, planning effective ways to answer those questions, and showcasing results to stakeholders.
• Choose implementation approaches that balance speed and realism, enabling prototypes to provide sufficiently confident answers quickly.
• Build APIs that provide data from backend systems for use in your own and other prototypes.
• Create prototypes that enable differentiating and industry-leading product enhancements and introduce advanced and emerging technologies.
• Guide Data Scientists in building their own prototypes to address open questions and demonstrate the value of proposed solutions.
• Build effective prototypes that make sophisticated and impactful data models easier to understand and support technical feasibility assessments, implementation planning, user studies, and strategic business decisions.

Requirements

• 6+ years of experience in a hands-on web development role, particularly front-end development.
• Strong understanding of data visualization fundamentals.
• Expertise with TypeScript, JavaScript, React, and low-level data visualization frameworks such as D3, Visx, or WebGL.
• Experience building custom interactions and novel user interface components.
• Strong communication skills and experience working closely with Data Scientists and/or ML Engineers.
• Prior experience in a prototyping role is a bonus.

Location

This position is US remote eligible. The role may include occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites, as agreed with the manager. Candidates must live in a state where Airbnb, Inc. has a registered entity.

Compensation

The base pay range is $196,000–$227,000 USD. Actual base pay depends on factors including training, transferable skills, work experience, business needs, and market demands.
