Reddit is seeking a Software Engineer to help build the next version of its media web experience. The role focuses on the technical components used to deliver video and audio content, including Reddit's web media player and the APIs that power it. The engineer will use industry patterns from leading streaming platforms to build seamless, low-latency playback experiences and interactive tools for creators and users.

Responsibilities

  • Work cross-functionally with product, design, and engineering teams to execute product and business strategy and build new products and features.
  • Contribute to the full development cycle, including technical design, development, testing, experimentation, analysis, and launch.
  • Design and implement end-to-end full-stack solutions.
  • Optimize web UI components for the media player using React and TypeScript.
  • Develop and maintain the Go and Python backend APIs that power the media player.
  • Move quickly while balancing quality and reliability.
  • Review code and design documents, and provide feedback on product specifications and mockups.
  • Collaborate with client and platform engineers to improve media performance across Reddit and deliver better content globally.
  • Contribute to standards that improve developer workflows and recommend best practices.
  • Mentor junior engineers and help grow their technical expertise.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, a similar technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 3 years of software development experience in one or more general-purpose programming languages, such as Go, Python, Rust, or Ruby.
  • Proficiency in modern web development technologies, including JavaScript, React, Next.js, and TypeScript.
  • Experience translating complex UI/UX designs into scalable web applications.
  • Experience with GraphQL, REST, HTTP, gRPC, and basic Thrift, along with the ability to design and implement maintainable APIs.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks and deliver projects on schedule.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively in a fully remote environment with technical and non-technical audiences.

Compensation

The base salary range is $165,000–$229,000 USD per year. The position is also eligible for equity in the form of restricted stock units and, depending on the position offered, may be eligible for commission. Final offer amounts depend on factors including skills, depth of experience, and relevant licenses or credentials.
