Anthropic is seeking a Transformative AI Research Economist to build macroeconomic models of transformative AI and develop scenario-based forecasting tools for reasoning quantitatively about economic trajectories without historical precedent. The role focuses on aggregate growth, income distribution, and economic governance under transformative-AI scenarios, grounded in microeconomic signals from the Anthropic Economic Index and privacy-preserving analysis of millions of real-world AI interactions.

Responsibilities

  • Build macroeconomic models of transformative AI spanning growth, labor markets, and income distribution.
  • Develop and maintain scenario-based forecasting tools and publish forecasts for GDP, productivity, and unemployment under different AI-capability trajectories.
  • Ground macroeconomic projections in microeconomic data from the Anthropic Economic Index, using observed patterns of adoption and task transformation.
  • Analyze income distribution and economic governance under transformative-AI scenarios.
  • Contribute to AI-powered research tools for economics.
  • Contribute to Economic Index Reports and publish Research Briefs.
  • Build relationships with academic institutions, policy think tanks, and research partners.
  • Support external engagement through research publications, policy briefs, and presentations.

Requirements

  • PhD in Economics or an exceptional candidate close to completion.
  • Background in macroeconomics, growth theory, or public finance, ideally with exposure to task-based frameworks and labor economics.
  • Research record engaging seriously with transformative AI as a subject for rigorous economic modeling.
  • Relevant experience in macroeconomic modeling, structural estimation, scenario-based or time-series forecasting, task-based technological change, computational methods, agent-based modeling, large-scale simulation, income distribution, inequality, or using large language models in research workflows.
  • Proficiency in Python, Julia, or similar tools for computational economics.
  • Facility with AI coding agents and willingness to learn new technical tools and frameworks.
  • Ability to lead research projects from conception to publication, work on tight timelines, revise work as new data arrives, and communicate technical findings to diverse audiences.
  • Strong interest in ensuring AI development benefits humanity.
  • Minimum education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. The required field of study must be relevant to the role.
