Details

The Monetization team is a cross-functional group working across engineering, product, research, and design to build user-first, privacy-preserving monetization products, including next-generation advertising experiences. The team operates in a greenfield environment and partners closely with Product, Design, and Research to bring new ad experiences to OpenAI surfaces at global scale, including the ChatGPT experience.

The Ads Formats team owns the creative rendering and presentation layer for next-generation ads across different surfaces and media types. This role will build native Android experiences and client-side systems that structure, render, and deliver text, image, video, native, conversational, and interactive ads across OpenAI's ads ecosystem.

Responsibilities

  • Build and ship ad format experiences on Android, including text, image, video, native, conversational, and interactive ad surfaces.
  • Design and maintain shared Android frameworks and primitives for ad rendering, creative presentation, media handling, format validation, and policy-aware UX patterns.
  • Own complex Android systems end-to-end across UI architecture, networking, local persistence and state, observability, rendering performance, and release processes.
  • Build integrations with Android platform and ecosystem components, including media playback, deep links, device capabilities, and app lifecycle behavior.
  • Optimize performance, reliability, and responsiveness at global scale, including rendering quality, scrolling performance, startup time, media load latency, network resiliency, battery usage, and crash-free sessions.
  • Establish and evolve testing and quality systems, including unit, integration, UI, screenshot, automated regression, and release validation workflows.
  • Collaborate with Product, Design, Research, backend, and Safety to deliver advertising experiences that meet high standards for safety, privacy, fairness, and policy compliance.
  • Provide technical leadership through architecture reviews, mentoring, and setting engineering standards across Android ad formats and monetization surfaces.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of professional software engineering experience with meaningful Android ownership.
  • A track record of building and shipping high-quality Android applications in production, especially for user-facing, performance-sensitive, or trust-sensitive flows.
  • Fluency in Kotlin and familiarity with Android tooling and architecture, including Gradle, Android Studio, modern app architecture patterns, and Jetpack Compose.
  • Experience building polished mobile UI systems, media-rich experiences, rendering frameworks, design systems, or reusable product infrastructure.
  • Ability to make pragmatic architectural tradeoffs while keeping systems maintainable, testable, and scalable.
  • Strong focus on performance, reliability, privacy, user experience, and product polish.
  • Ability to thrive in 0-to-1 environments where systems, architecture, and user experiences must be defined from scratch.
  • Bonus experience with ad formats, creative rendering systems, media delivery, native ads, conversational products, mobile monetization, or large-scale consumer mobile applications.

Benefits

  • Base salary of $230,000–$385,000 per year, plus equity and performance-related bonuses for eligible employees.
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance, with employer contributions to Health Savings Accounts.
  • Pre-tax Flexible Spending Accounts and commuter benefits.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with employer match.
  • Paid parental, medical, and caregiver leave.
  • Paid time off, company holidays, office closures, and paid sick or safe time.
  • Mental health and wellness support.
  • Employer-paid basic life and disability coverage.
  • Annual learning and development stipend.
  • Daily office meals and eligible meal delivery credits.
  • Relocation support for eligible employees.

This role is exclusively based at the San Francisco headquarters. OpenAI is an equal opportunity employer and provides reasonable accommodations to applicants with disabilities.
