Details
Reddit's Safety and Moderation organization builds tools that help moderators keep Reddit safe, healthy, and scalable. The team is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer to ship high-impact features and improvements for moderators while partnering closely with frontend and mobile engineers, product, and design teams.
This role will drive technical and product strategy, operations, architecture, and execution for a large-scale internet platform. It is completely remote-friendly within the United States. Employees located near Reddit offices in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York City, or Chicago may use those offices as often as they would like.
Responsibilities
- Work cross-functionally with product, design, and engineering counterparts to execute product and business strategy and build new products and features.
- Contribute to the full development cycle, including technical design, development, testing, experimentation, analysis, and launch.
- Review code and design documents and provide feedback on product specifications and mocks.
- Lead a team of engineers and establish standards that improve developer workflows.
- Recommend best practices and coach and mentor engineers to support their professional development.
- Continuously improve technical and non-technical abilities.
Requirements
- 8+ years of software development experience in one or more general-purpose programming languages, including Go, Python, Rust, or Ruby.
- Experience with GraphQL, REST, HTTP, and Thrift or gRPC basics, with the ability to design and implement maintainable APIs.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, a similar technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks and keep projects on schedule.
- Entrepreneurial spirit; self-directed, innovative, action-oriented, and comfortable working in fast-paced environments with ambiguity and failure.
- Experience partnering effectively with cross-functional teams in a fully remote environment.
- Ability to discuss complex topics with technical and non-technical audiences.

Compensation
The base salary range is $217,000–$303,900 USD. The position is also eligible for equity in the form of restricted stock units and, depending on the position offered, may be eligible for a commission. Final offer amounts depend on factors including skills, depth of experience, and relevant licenses or credentials.
