OpenAI’s Youth team works to make AI safe, useful, and empowering for young people. The team focuses on age assurance, always-on safety, learning and education experiences, and support for K–12 schools, educators, classrooms, and collaborative learning.

This staff-level product design role will shape how young people safely engage with AI and help define OpenAI’s emerging education experiences. The work spans immediate product needs and zero-to-one opportunities, including age-appropriate safety systems, learning tools, and group-work experiences. The role requires exceptional interaction and visual design craft, deep product and systems thinking, and the ability to turn complex safety, learning, and institutional needs into clear, trustworthy, and engaging experiences.

The role is based at OpenAI’s San Francisco headquarters and involves close collaboration with product, engineering, research, safety, policy, and design teams.

Responsibilities

• Establish a high standard for design craft across OpenAI’s youth and education experiences.
• Lead end-to-end design for products that help young people use AI safely, confidently, and productively.
• Design clear, age-appropriate experiences for safety, age assurance, and other sensitive or high-trust interactions.
• Shape zero-to-one K–12 experiences involving school districts, educators, classrooms, collaborative work, and builder-style workflows.
• Turn emerging ideas into concepts, prototypes, and high-fidelity product experiences for evaluation and development.
• Partner with research, engineering, product, safety, policy, and design teams to balance user needs, technical capabilities, and responsible deployment.
• Conduct and apply research with young people, educators, institutions, and other relevant users and partners.
• Develop reusable patterns and principles that create coherence across youth and education products.

Requirements

• Exceptional interaction and visual design craft.
• Experience leading substantial, ambiguous, or zero-to-one product areas and shaping both vision and execution.
• Strong product and systems thinking.
• Ability to explore broadly, iterate deeply, and turn ideas into concrete, polished product direction.
• Experience designing thoughtful experiences for sensitive, high-trust, or safety-critical contexts.
• Ability to create engaging and intuitive products without compromising safety or clarity.
• Ability to navigate the needs of multiple audiences, including young people, educators, administrators, and institutional partners.
• Strong communication and cross-disciplinary collaboration skills.
• Willingness to remain hands-on throughout the product-development process.
