Safety Systems manages the complete lifecycle of safety efforts for OpenAI's frontier models, ensuring responsible deployment and positive societal impact. The work spans system-level safeguards, model training, evaluation, red-teaming, and initiatives to mitigate misuse and misalignment.

The Product Manager will focus on risks related to multimodal models, including audio, image, and video deployments. The role involves driving initiatives that promote safe, impactful, and user-aligned products while collaborating with AI researchers, software engineers, policy experts, data scientists, and other cross-functional partners. The position requires structured analysis, adversarial thinking, and the ability to address challenging and ambiguous problems.

This position is based in San Francisco, California, with relocation assistance available.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with AI research, engineering, data science, policy teams, and other stakeholders to embed safety throughout the development and deployment of multimodal AI models, including GPT-Live, ChatGPT Images, and multimodal capabilities in frontier AI models.
  • Develop comprehensive frameworks for understanding and mitigating deployment safety risks using data analysis, expert consultation, and adversarial assessments.
  • Define strategic priorities and product roadmaps focused on deployment safety, reliability, and management of multimodal AI capabilities.
  • Create scalable approaches for evaluating and improving safety outcomes.
  • Establish repeatable processes for integrating cutting-edge AI safety research into models and product offerings.
  • Develop and continuously refine clear, actionable metrics that capture safety performance and user experience at scale.

Requirements

  • 6+ years of product management or related industry experience, with specific expertise in AI safety, trust and safety, integrity, or related domains.
  • Interest in interdisciplinary fields such as human-computer interaction, psychology, philosophy, or similar areas.
  • Hands-on experience driving consensus and action in ambiguous environments.
  • Ability to identify and challenge underlying assumptions and constraints through insightful questioning.
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills and the ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly and persuasively.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
