Details

Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. The Safeguards Enforcement Analyst focused on Chem & Explosives Harms enforces usage policy to detect and mitigate misuse of AI systems for chemical and explosives harms. The role sits at the intersection of chemical and explosives threat analysis and platform enforcement: reading real model interactions, making fast defensible calls about benign versus malicious activity, and improving enforcement workflows and automated detection systems. This position may expose you to explicit sexual, violent, or psychologically disturbing content and carries shared on-call responsibilities across Policy and Enforcement teams.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce Usage Policies with focus on chemical and explosives risks and harmful AI use.
  • Own and improve enforcement monitoring workflows for chemical & explosives harms: detection, investigation, triage, and escalation.
  • Monitor and analyze platform activity to identify emerging patterns related to chemical and explosives threats (within the broader CBRNE landscape).
  • Design and architect automated enforcement systems and review workflows that scale while maintaining high accuracy across a complex content surface.
  • Conduct thorough investigations of potential violations, gather and document evidence to support enforcement decisions.
  • Surface trends proactively and propose improvements to detection methods and review workflows.
  • Partner with Engineering and Data Science teams to optimize detection models and automated enforcement systems for policy violations.
  • Partner with Policy and Threat Intelligence teams to understand potential exploits, contribute to risk-assessment frameworks, and handle escalations and time-sensitive situations.

Requirements

  • Degree in a chemistry-related field (chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science) and/or relevant professional experience in a related field.
  • Experience in Trust & Safety, content moderation, or policy enforcement at platform scale, including working with generative AI tools to refine and optimize content review and enforcement workflows.
  • Experience utilizing AI tools to develop data dashboards for metrics collection and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to analyze complex, ambiguous situations and make well-reasoned, defensible decisions under time pressure.
  • Proactive and self-directed: spot trends, dig in, and ship improvements independently.
  • Strong written communication and ability to translate technical chemistry concepts for technical and non-technical audiences.

Preferred qualifications

  • Subject-matter expertise in chemical and explosives defense, security, WMD/CBRNE non-proliferation, or threat intelligence.
  • Understanding of adversary intent, acquisition and weaponization pathways, dual-use concerns, cross-platform threat analysis, and OSINT techniques relevant to weapons of mass destruction.
  • Proficiency in SQL and/or other data analysis tools to draw insights from large datasets and monitor enforcement workflow health.
  • Familiarity with the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), scheduled chemicals, precursor controls, and energetic-materials safety frameworks.

Compensation

  • Annual salary range: $245,000 - $285,000 USD.

Logistics & Other Details

  • Location: Remote-friendly within the United States; offices in San Francisco, CA; New York City, NY; and Washington, DC.
  • Minimum education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
  • Location-based hybrid policy: staff expected to be in office at least 25% of the time (some roles may require more).
  • Visa sponsorship: Anthropic states they sponsor visas and retain an immigration lawyer to assist, though not all roles/candidates may be eligible.
  • Safety note: Applicants may be exposed to disturbing content; shared on-call duty required.
  • Benefits mentioned: competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, office space for collaboration.
