Details

Grafana Labs is hiring a Senior Backend Engineer to join the Databases team, which owns telemetry databases including Mimir for metrics, Loki for logs, Tempo for traces, and Pyroscope for profiles. These open-source projects are also offered as Grafana Cloud services and on-premise solutions.

The systems are multi-tenant distributed systems implemented primarily in Go and running on Kubernetes across GCP, Azure, and AWS. The team also works with Prometheus, Grafana Agent, Mimir proxies, and OpenTelemetry. Grafana Labs is a remote-first company with a global, collaborative culture and a strong focus on open source.

Responsibilities

Influence the product roadmap and define career objectives.
Work with the team to deliver, evaluate, and improve new features.
Drive projects from initial ideation through delivery and operations.
Contribute to open-source projects beyond the immediate team’s scope.
Design, build, operate, and maintain critical systems, owning their reliability, performance, and availability.
Participate in on-call rotations and take ownership of operated services.
Support team members, participate in design discussions, and collaborate remotely.
Develop a deeper understanding of Grafana Cloud, customers, and a large distributed-system codebase.
Use AI coding assistants for prototyping, test generation, refactoring, documentation, and incident follow-ups, subject to security guidelines and code review standards.

Requirements

Solid experience with at least one programming language. Grafana Labs primarily uses Go; Python, C, C++, Rust, or similar experience is also relevant.
Experience delivering projects independently, from requirements gathering and ideation through shipping to customers.
Experience developing cloud software or working in systems engineering.
Experience writing clean, robust, performant, and maintainable software.
A self-starting, action-oriented approach.
Customer focus and an interest in building intuitive products.
Pragmatic problem-solving skills, including breaking down complex challenges, delivering modular solutions, gathering feedback, and iterating.
Strong communication and collaboration skills in a fully remote environment.

Bonus Skills

Kubernetes and/or Docker.
Grafana and Prometheus, including operational or on-call experience.
Microservices architecture and distributed systems.
On-call, operations, SRE, or infrastructure-as-code experience.
