Senior Backend Engineer - Databases - Loki Query

Details

Grafana Labs is hiring a senior backend engineer to work on the Databases team, which owns the telemetry databases Mimir, Loki, Tempo, and Pyroscope. These open-source projects are also offered as Grafana Cloud services and on-premise solutions. The systems are multi-tenant distributed systems implemented in Go and running on Kubernetes across GCP, Azure, and AWS.

The role is remote and open to applicants based in Spain, Ireland, Germany, the UK, or Sweden.

Responsibilities

• Influence the roadmap and personal career objectives.
• Work with the team to deliver new features and iterate based on results.
• Drive projects from initial ideation through operations after delivery to customers.
• Contribute to open-source projects beyond the team’s direct scope.
• Design, build, operate, and maintain critical systems, taking ownership of reliability, performance, and availability.
• Participate in on-call rotations and own the services being operated.
• Support team members, participate in design discussions, and collaborate across the team.
• Develop a deeper understanding of Grafana Cloud, customers, and a large distributed-system codebase.
• Use modern AI coding assistants for prototyping, test generation, refactoring, documentation, and incident follow-ups, subject to security guidelines and code review standards.

Requirements

• Solid experience with at least one programming language. The team uses Go; familiarity with Python, C, C++, Rust, or similar languages is also relevant.
• Experience delivering projects from requirements gathering and brainstorming through product shipment in a self-driven manner.
• Experience developing software that runs in the cloud or experience with systems engineering.
• Experience writing clean, robust, performant, and maintainable software.
• A motivated, self-starting approach with a bias toward action.
• Customer focus and an interest in creating intuitive products that meet customer needs.
• Pragmatic problem-solving skills, including breaking down complex challenges, delivering modular solutions and MVPs, gathering feedback, and iterating.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills in a fully remote environment.

Bonus Skills

• Experience with Kubernetes and/or Docker.
• Experience using Grafana and Prometheus in operational roles, during on-call work, or in hobby or homelab projects.
• Exposure to microservices architecture and distributed systems.
• Familiarity with on-call work, operations, SRE tasks, or infrastructure as code.

Compensation

The UK base compensation range is £91,000–£1,114,000. Actual compensation may vary based on level, experience, and skill set. Compensation ranges and benefits are country-specific.
