Senior Software Engineer, Media Experience

Reddit is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to help build the next version of its media infrastructure. The role focuses on the technical components used to ingest, process, store, and deliver video and audio content, while addressing complex technical challenges and delivering high-quality media experiences globally.

Responsibilities

• Work cross-functionally with product, design, and engineering teams to execute product and business strategy and build new products and features.
• Contribute to the full development lifecycle, including technical design, development, testing, experimentation, analysis, and launch.
• Review code, design documents, product specifications, and mocks, and provide constructive feedback.
• Establish standards that improve developer workflows and recommend engineering best practices.
• Mentor junior engineers and help grow their technical expertise.
• Balance development speed with software quality while building new products.
• Collaborate with client and platform engineers to improve media performance and content delivery globally.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, a similar technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• At least 3 years of industry experience with large-scale distributed systems.
• At least 5 years of hands-on professional software development experience in one or more general-purpose programming languages, including Go, Python, Ruby, Java, or C++.
• Experience with GraphQL, REST, HTTP, gRPC, and Thrift basics, including the ability to design and implement maintainable APIs.
• Experience with distributed caching layers and large-scale distributed data storage systems such as Redis.
• Familiarity with image processing and delivery technologies, including image scaling, cropping, and image formats such as progressive JPEG and WebP.
• Familiarity with HTTP Live Streaming (HLS), MPEG-DASH, MP4, other streaming protocols, and video compression standards such as H.264, H.265/HEVC, VP9, and AV1.
• Strong organizational and prioritization skills, with the ability to deliver projects on schedule.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively in a fully remote environment with technical and non-technical audiences.

• Curiosity and commitment to staying current with video compression technologies through conferences, research papers, and industry trends.
• Strong understanding of measuring and improving video visual quality metrics such as VMAF and PSNR.
• Hands-on expertise with FFMPEG, GPAC, and similar media frameworks for processing, modifying, and manipulating media streams.
• Experience with client-side media technologies and libraries such as AVFoundation, VideoToolbox, and video prefetching.
• Familiarity with background data fetching.
• Strong data analysis skills using SQL.

Compensation

The base salary range is $190,000–$267,000 USD per year. The position is also eligible for equity in the form of restricted stock units and may be eligible for a commission depending on the position offered.
