Details
Grafana Labs is hiring a Staff Backend Software Engineer to work on Loki and the Databases team. The role is remote and available to candidates located in Australia or Singapore.
Grafana Cloud is a composable observability platform integrating metrics, logs, traces, and profiles with Grafana. The Databases team owns Mimir for metrics, Loki for logs, Tempo for traces, and Pyroscope for profiles. These open-source projects are also offered as Grafana Cloud services and on-premise solutions.
The systems are multi-tenant distributed systems implemented primarily in Go and running on Kubernetes across GCP, Azure, and AWS. The wider engineering organization also works with Prometheus, Grafana Alloy, Mimir proxies, and OpenTelemetry. Grafana Labs is a remote-first, global company with a strong open-source culture.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, operate, and maintain critical systems, owning their reliability, performance, and availability.
- Influence the product roadmap and personal career objectives.
- Deliver new features, evaluate results, and iterate improvements.
- Drive projects from initial ideation through production operations.
- Contribute to open-source projects beyond the immediate team’s scope.
- Participate in on-call rotations and take ownership of operated services.
- Mentor and support team members, participate in design discussions, and collaborate across the team.
- Develop a deeper understanding of Grafana Cloud, its customers, and the codebase of a large distributed system.
- Work independently and communicate effectively in a remote engineering organization.
Grafana Labs supports AI-assisted development, including prototyping, test generation, refactoring, documentation, and incident follow-ups, with company-funded usage of modern AI coding assistants and access to frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.
Requirements
- Solid experience with at least one programming language. Grafana Labs primarily uses Go; familiarity with Python, C, C++, Rust, or similar languages is also relevant.
- Experience delivering projects from requirements gathering and brainstorming through shipping products to customers in a self-directed way.
- Experience developing software that runs in the cloud or experience with systems engineering.
- Experience writing clean, robust, performant, and maintainable software.
Bonus Qualifications
- Experience writing low-level code for databases, storage layers, or query engines.
- Experience working with Kubernetes.
- Experience using Grafana and/or Prometheus in operational roles, including on-call work or hobby and homelab projects.
- Exposure to microservices architecture and distributed systems, or a desire to learn.
- Familiarity with on-call work, operations, SRE tasks, or infrastructure as code.

Compensation
In Australia, the base compensation range is AUD 168,000 to AUD 210,000 per year. Actual compensation may vary based on level, experience, and skill set. Compensation ranges are country-specific, and recruiters will discuss the applicable market pay range and benefits for candidates applying from other listed locations.
