About Sentry

Software runs the world and the pace is faster than ever. Sentry helps developers fix errors and performance issues before users notice, so teams can spend less time firefighting and more time building.

Trusted by more than 200,000 organizations, Sentry is an application monitoring standard, and its team is building its AI-native future.

About the Role

Issue Workflow is Sentry's primary product surface. The issue platform processes billions of events daily and turns them into actionable insights that help millions of developers fix bugs faster.

As a Staff Software Engineer on the Issue Workflow team, you will architect the systems that power this experience. You will work at the intersection of high-scale distributed systems and product engineering, building real-time data pipelines, search backends, and analysis systems that surface signal from noise. This is product engineering at massive scale, where every architectural decision impacts millions of debugging sessions.

You will be the technical leader who shapes how Sentry groups issues, makes search fast, enables sophisticated agentic workflows, and ensures that the product remains performant at billions-of-events scale. Your work will define what is possible for the most trafficked part of Sentry's platform.

Responsibilities

  • Drive technical strategy and roadmap by partnering with engineering leadership, product, and design to shape the multi-quarter technical vision for the Issue Workflow platform.
  • Make strategic decisions about architectural direction, technology choices, and technical debt.
  • Ensure the team is building a strong foundation to scale with Sentry's growth.
  • Solve complex performance and scalability challenges.
  • Champion product quality and user experience by building features that account for interfaces, error messages, loading states, edge cases, and measurable performance improvements.
  • Instrument systems so the team can measure and improve them.
  • Mentor and elevate other engineers, helping them grow their skills and celebrating wins while learning from failures.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of full-stack software engineering experience, ideally with Python and TypeScript.
  • Experience as a distributed systems engineer working with high-scale architectures.
  • Knowledge of eventual consistency, partitioning strategies, caching layers, query optimization, failure-resistant design, and graceful degradation.
  • Product-minded approach and the ability to collaborate effectively with Product and Design.
  • Strong full-stack instincts, including knowledge of frontend performance, API design, and user experience.
  • Expertise in domain modeling, distributed systems, data stores, and message queues.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with PostgreSQL, ClickHouse, and Kafka is preferred.

Benefits

  • Equity.
  • Bonus.
  • Sentry is committed to equal employment opportunities and provides reasonable accommodations to candidates and employees with disabilities.
