Design Engineer

At Saily, the Design Engineer will help shape Aurora, the company's design system, across both design and code. The role involves building and evolving reusable UI components, crafting polished interactions, and creating tooling that makes design and development workflows faster and more consistent. The position works closely with designers and engineers to bridge Figma and front-end implementation while driving accessibility, quality, and design system adoption across teams.

Responsibilities

• Develop, maintain, and evolve Aurora component kits: ReactKit, AstroKit, and AppKit, while keeping component contracts consistent across them.
• Contribute to Aurora's visual and interaction language, including component anatomy, variants, states, interaction behavior, and motion in Figma and code.
• Build internal design tooling, including Figma plugins, CLI utilities, CI checks, prototyping tools, and AI-native workflows.
• Champion best practices and drive adoption of design automation, Storybook, and testing strategies within the design engineering context.
• Guide, train, and support product development teams in adopting and using the Aurora design system.
• Participate actively in the design process by providing technical input, prototyping interactions, and translating design concepts into polished, interactive, and performant UI components.
• Implement engaging animations and micro-interactions, especially for key user-facing elements.
• Build and maintain accessible components compliant with relevant standards, including WCAG AA.
• Own the technical implementation and architecture of design system components, ensuring code quality, performance, and design fidelity.

Requirements

• Proven experience building, maintaining, and scaling design systems.
• Deep understanding of design system principles, component architecture, and token strategies.
• Strong product design fundamentals, including visual hierarchy, typography, spacing, and interaction design.
• Ability to make independent design decisions and contribute to design, not just implementation.
• Strong command of JavaScript, modern CSS including Tailwind CSS, and semantic HTML.
• Ability to become productive quickly in an unfamiliar technology stack.
• Figma fluency, including variables, component architecture, and accurate design-to-code translation.
• Experience with the Figma Plugin API or MCP is a strong advantage.
• Advanced practical knowledge of Storybook.js for component development, documentation, and testing.
• Excellent cross-disciplinary collaboration skills across design, engineering, and product.
• Experience with design tools such as Figma and translating designs accurately into code.
