Engineering Manager, Search Storage

Reddit's Search Infrastructure team builds and operates foundational components for platform teams. The systems support classical ranking and search, including BM25, as well as vector embeddings and semantic search. The team builds and evolves platforms using Milvus, Vespa, Solr, and Kubernetes, with a focus on reliability, performance, efficiency, and developer productivity.

The role will help establish the future of Reddit's search capabilities as the company's use of AI and embedding models grows. These capabilities support Reddit.com search, Ads Platforms, and other ranking and relevance use cases.

Responsibilities

• Work with the team to select, scope, and drive high-leverage projects aligned with Reddit's goals.
• Build and develop a team responsible for creating more efficient and reliable storage systems.
• Mentor individual contributors and provide leadership for the team.
• Collaborate with teams across Reddit Engineering.
• Continuously develop technical and non-technical abilities.
• Scale search primitives, including databases, to be secure, highly available, and geo-distributed.
• Contribute to open-source ecosystems and codebases involving Go, Rust, C++, and Java.
• Manage the full lifecycle of systems, including provisioning, scaling, self-healing, and decommissioning through software engineering.
• Abstract and operate systems such as Milvus, Vespa, and Solr to support lexical search, semantic search, and relevance/ranking use cases.
• Run storage systems efficiently without sacrificing reliability.

Requirements

• At least 3 years of experience managing high-performing engineering teams.
• At least 7 years of experience with backend infrastructure, focusing on storage systems.
• At least 5 years of experience working in high-scale environments.
• Experience with storage systems for full-text search and vector similarity search, including approximate nearest neighbor (ANN) search, is highly desirable.
• Experience running storage systems on orchestration or distributed systems such as Kubernetes.
• Strong focus on scalability, performance, and quality.
• Deep intuition for how critical infrastructure systems work at scale.
• High empathy, excellent communication skills, and the ability to find compromise across the engineering organization.

Additional Information

This job posting may span more than one career level. The base salary range is $217,000–$303,000 USD. Final offer amounts depend on factors including skills, depth of work experience, and relevant licenses or credentials. In select roles and locations, interviews may be recorded, transcribed, and summarized by artificial intelligence, with an option to opt out before scheduled interviews.
