Forward Deployed Engineer, Finance [Office of the CTO]

Coinbase is seeking a Forward Deployed Engineer to join the Office of the CTO and serve as a founding engineer embedded within the FP&A and Treasury organization. The role focuses on identifying high-value workflow opportunities, rapidly prototyping solutions with Coinbase's existing AI platform, and driving measurable adoption of AI tooling across Finance. The engineer will connect Finance stakeholders with the engineering teams responsible for Coinbase's AI platform by acting as an advocate, translator, and builder.

Coinbase is a remote-first, but not remote-only company. Employees are expected to meet quarterly for in-person working sessions called “surges.”

Responsibilities

• Embed with FP&A and Treasury leadership to identify high-leverage automation opportunities and develop a detailed understanding of workflows such as period-end close, variance analysis, and liquidity stress-testing.
• Rapidly prototype solutions using Coinbase's existing AI platform as the default foundation before recommending new builds.
• Own the Finance automation roadmap in partnership with the VP of FP&A and Treasury.
• Translate financial workflows, including budgeting cycles, GL reconciliation, multi-entity consolidation, and regulatory filing drafts, into engineering requirements.
• Clearly communicate engineering constraints to Finance stakeholders.
• Define build-versus-buy strategies for Finance tooling, including evaluating internal builds, partner-team solutions, vendor products, and tools to retire.
• Ensure automated financial outputs are traceable, reviewable, and defensible to auditors.
• Treat SOX compliance, segregation of duties, and human-in-the-loop controls as core design considerations.
• Drive adoption through brown-bag sessions, prototype walkthroughs, and feedback loops with FP&A and Treasury teams.
• Use generative AI responsibly while maintaining human oversight and improving workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.

Requirements

• 5+ years of software engineering experience and a demonstrated ability to ship production systems in ambiguous, stakeholder-heavy environments.
• Greenfield engineering experience is a strong plus.
• Hands-on experience deploying LLM-based applications, including prompt engineering, evaluation frameworks, hallucination guardrails, and human-in-the-loop design for high-stakes financial outputs.
• Ability to work with non-technical domain experts, quickly understand complex workflows, and translate them into engineering requirements.
• Familiarity with financial systems concepts, including ERP data flows, reconciliation logic, trial balances, and SOX-controlled environments.
• Familiarity with ERP platforms such as NetSuite, Workday, and Anaplan.
• CPA certification is not required, but candidates should be open to learning financial concepts.
• Familiarity with multi-agent orchestration concepts, including agent handoffs, escalation, and auditability.
• Experience in Forward Deployed Engineering, Solutions Engineering, or an embedded technical advisory role, ideally in fintech, finance technology, or enterprise automation.

Compensation

The annual base salary range is $218,025–$256,500 USD, excluding equity and bonus. Total compensation may also include equity, bonus eligibility, and medical, dental, vision, and 401(k) benefits.
