Details
ClickHouse is a fast-growing cloud company (Forbes Cloud 100) focused on real-time analytics, data warehousing, observability, and AI workloads. The company serves thousands of customers and is rapidly expanding its Cloud product.
The role is remote in the United States and sits on a small founding team responsible for integrating ClickHouse Cloud into partner environments (cloud platforms, BI/visualization tools, marketplaces, identity federation). As the founding backend engineer on the team you'll set technical defaults, own end-to-end integrations, and operate across trust boundaries with external platforms.
About the team
The team's mission is to bring ClickHouse Cloud into environments customers already trust so their data remains where it lives. Integrations include native cloud data platforms, BI/visualization tools, and developer/data platforms via marketplaces and identity federation. The role involves engineering across platform constraints and partner approval cycles.
Responsibilities
- Own integrations end-to-end: design, implementation, and production systems
- Architect auth and identity flows, multi-tenancy, data movement, performance, and production behavior
- Run what you build: be on-call, own infrastructure, CI, deployment, and observability for your services
- Work on top of external platforms you don't control, assess and manage risks vs. partner responsibilities
- Partner with internal teams whose services you depend on: define interfaces, unblock progress, and coordinate work
- Write design docs, RFCs, and technical proposals to shape team direction
Requirements
- 5+ years building software, with significant experience on data-heavy or integration-focused systems
- Strong backend and systems instincts; able to reason about deployment topology, multi-tenancy, and data movement
- Experience with modern auth protocols, service principals, and identity federation
- Experience building on top of other platforms (handling incomplete docs, breaking changes, partner constraints)
- Comfortable shipping under ambiguity and making sensible decisions before specs are finalized
- Good collaboration skills with other engineering teams; ability to earn trust through clear thinking and communication
- Primarily a backend engineer, comfortable using JavaScript/TypeScript when helpful
- Comfortable using AI-assisted developer tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot) and able to be transparent about their use
- Strong written communication (design docs, PRs, RFCs)
Nice to have
- Familiarity with major cloud data or analytics platform ecosystems
- Deep experience in auth and identity federation or shipping through partner marketplaces/certification processes
- Experience designing multi-tenant SaaS platforms and isolation/deployment topologies
- Working knowledge of ClickHouse or another columnar/OLAP engine
Compensation
- Typical starting salary range (United States): $141,000 - $208,000 USD
- Typical starting salary range (United States - Premium Markets, e.g., SF Bay Area, NYC Metro): $157,000 - $238,000 USD
These ranges reflect the employer's good-faith estimate of minimum and maximum pay for the role; actual compensation may vary by candidate factors and location.
Perks
- Flexible, remote-friendly work environment; global company operating in 20+ countries
- Employer contributions toward healthcare
- Stock options for new employees
- Flexible time off in the US; generous entitlement in other countries
- $500 home office setup stipend for remote employees
