About proficiency levels:
- 1-2 — basic awareness. Minimal hands-on experience, and a rudimentary understanding of the technology's purpose;
- 3-6 — daily use. Comfortable and regular usage, capable of handling common tasks and challenges related to the technology;
- 7-9 — you are an expert, you can teach others, you know all the pitfalls and tricks;
- 10 — exceptional knowledge, comprehensive understanding, and adeptness in all aspects of the technology, including advanced problem-solving. Think twice before claiming or demanding such level.

Details
Airbnb's Data Authoring Platform turns raw data into decision-grade insight at scale. The platform serves more than 4,000 internal data producers and consumers by helping them model, transform, and serve trustworthy data and metrics for A/B experimentation, executive dashboards, product, finance, and business intelligence.
The team owns Minerva, Airbnb's semantic layer and metrics platform; an end-to-end data-authoring framework; and tooling for reliability, governance, cost-efficiency, automated testing, anomaly detection, and right-sized materialization.
Responsibilities
- Build and extend Minerva's core services, including the query rewriting service.
- Own and drive high-impact workstreams from definition through delivery.
- Take on loosely defined problems, partner with users and teams to scope them, and propose and deliver solutions.
- Track semantic layer techniques and database engine capabilities to inform priorities.
- Partner with teams across Airbnb to make data easier to query and use.
- Own the design, implementation, testing, and on-call support for the systems you build.
- Help internal users define, understand, and consume trustworthy business metrics.
- Depending on your background, partner closely with the experimentation team to identify gaps and shape how Minerva serves experimentation users.
Requirements
- 9+ years of hands-on software engineering experience, with most of that time spent building and deploying production applications and services rather than writing configuration and SQL.
- Deep proficiency in at least one modern general-purpose programming language, such as Java, Kotlin, Scala, Go, Python, or TypeScript.
- Experience working on data platforms or data tooling, with a good understanding of how users work with data.
- Demonstrated ability to independently scope and drive ambiguous, cross-team projects from design through launch.
- Strong command of object-oriented programming, API design, and distributed systems patterns.
- Strong communication skills and experience working across complex team and system interfaces.
Nice to Haves
- Experience with experimentation platforms, including assignment, metrics, analysis, or experiment tooling.
- Experience with metrics, semantic layer, business intelligence, or analytics platforms such as dbt, Tableau, or Superset.
- Experience with query engines, query rewriting or optimization, or data warehouse internals.
- Experience authoring domain-specific languages, compilers, or APIs that abstract data transformations.
- Prior data engineering or data science experience.
