Senior Staff Software Engineer, Client Architecture

Reddit is seeking a web client and mobile consumer product domain expert to lead the architectural overhaul of post and comment composers across all platforms. The role will define the multi-year technical vision for how users create content on Reddit, modernize composers, and develop new contribution formats, particularly video creation and editing. The position focuses on reducing client-side friction, integrating intelligent posting and commenting capabilities, and setting standards for client performance.

Responsibilities

• Define and execute the organization-wide client architecture strategy for seamless video creation, editing, and uploading within shared composers.
• Establish patterns for integrating future content formats into the client layer.
• Build and scale new contribution formats within shared post and comment experiences.
• Unblock strategic initiatives designed to reduce identity-risk barriers for sensitive content and productize low-effort creation formats.
• Serve as the technical anchor for the Contribution engineering team and influence the broader Content Ecosystem organization.
• Translate complex product requirements into actionable technical roadmaps.
• Drive alignment across Web, iOS, and Android platforms.
• Use AI-assisted development tools for prototyping, system design, and coding while validating and owning the final outputs.
• Evangelize AI as a development tool.
• Lead development of highly performant client infrastructure, including zero-latency rich-text rendering, resilient edge-optimized media upload pipelines, and state synchronization for offline and online editing.
• Optimize the global contribution funnel and contribution success rates.

Requirements

• 10+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Proven experience as a Senior Staff Engineer or Principal Engineer working on consumer-facing mobile or web client applications.
• Deep expertise in modern web architecture, including React, TypeScript, and advanced state management.
• Strong architectural command of native mobile paradigms, including iOS/Swift and Android/Kotlin.
• Ability to define unified client APIs and lead cross-platform engineering standards.
• Demonstrated experience solving client-side performance and rendering bottlenecks at scale.
• Experience building highly interactive features such as zero-latency rich-text editors, asynchronous media processing pipelines, or real-time state synchronization systems.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to influence VP-level technical direction and navigate tradeoffs between performance, reliability, and business impact without directly managing engineers.
• Demonstrated ability to lead large, cross-functional engineering initiatives balancing technical excellence with aggressive growth targets.

Additional Information

The base salary range for this position is $232,500–$325,500 USD. The role may span more than one career level and may be eligible for commission depending on the position offered.
