Details

Anthropic's Infrastructure organization builds and operates the distributed systems that train, serve, and secure its AI models. This role partners directly with Research teams to build reliable, scalable, and performant infrastructure, lead complex infrastructure initiatives, and address performance and scalability bottlenecks.

Responsibilities

  • Independently scope and lead complex, multi-month infrastructure projects from an ambiguous starting point through production.
  • Build strong partnerships with researchers and Research teams to understand their needs and deliver effective solutions.
  • Mentor other engineers and help raise the team's technical bar.
  • Build alignment on technical direction across multiple teams while working through ambiguous problem spaces.
  • Own the reliability, scalability, and security of systems as usage and complexity grow.
  • Lead improvements to operational processes across Infrastructure, including incident response, postmortems, and on-call rotations.

Requirements

  • Experience designing, building, and operating large-scale distributed systems or infrastructure in production.
  • Experience independently scoping and delivering complex, ambiguous, multi-month technical projects.
  • Prior experience serving as a technical lead or mentoring other engineers.
  • Experience making architectural decisions that other engineers and teams build upon.
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals and proficiency in at least one programming language, such as Python, Rust, Go, or Java.
  • Experience with modern cloud infrastructure, such as Kubernetes, infrastructure as code, AWS, or GCP.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience building alignment across multiple teams or stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 10 or more years of software engineering experience, excluding internships.
  • Experience with machine learning infrastructure, including GPUs, TPUs, or Trainium, and associated networking infrastructure such as NCCL.
  • Low-level systems experience, such as Linux kernel tuning or eBPF.
  • Experience applying security or privacy engineering best practices.

Education and Logistics

  • A bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience is required.
  • The field of study should be relevant to the role through coursework, training, or professional experience.
  • The role is remote-friendly but requires travel.
  • Anthropic currently expects staff to be in one of its offices at least 25% of the time, although some roles may require more office time.
  • Anthropic explicitly sponsors visas for eligible roles and candidates and provides access to an immigration lawyer.

Compensation

  • Annual salary: $320,000–$485,000 USD.
