Details
GitLab is seeking a Director of Enterprise Architecture and AI Intelligent Automation to define and govern how its internal systems connect, integrate, and evolve. Reporting to the VP, Business Systems, this role leads the Enterprise Architecture, Integration, and RPA teams and establishes architectural standards, governance frameworks, and a strategic vision for a scalable, secure, and business-aligned technology landscape.
The role combines strategic leadership with hands-on technical guidance across GitLab's internal technology ecosystem. The successful candidate will establish and lead an Architecture Review Board, rationalize automation and integration tools, determine when to use AI, RPA, or traditional integration, reduce shadow IT and software sprawl, and define clear patterns for data flows and systems of record.
Responsibilities
- Define and drive GitLab's enterprise architecture strategy, including principles and patterns for systems such as Salesforce, NetSuite, Zuora, Workato, and other core business applications.
- Establish and lead the Architecture Review Board, working with system owners and project teams to shape technical approaches and integration patterns.
- Apply business capability and enterprise architecture frameworks such as TOGAF.
- Design and govern integration architectures and data flow patterns, including API-first approaches, point-to-point integrations, data warehouses, and reverse ETL models.
- Partner with Data Governance and other cross-functional stakeholders.
- Create and execute an automation strategy spanning agentic AI, robotic process automation (RPA), and traditional integration technologies.
- Rationalize existing investments and define decision frameworks for technology and tool selection.
- Reduce shadow IT and software sprawl through software governance, portfolio rationalization, solution consolidation, and technical debt reduction.
- Ensure enterprise, integration, and intelligent automation architectures meet SOX compliance and security requirements.
- Establish robust access controls, data governance, and audit-ready integration patterns.
- Align decentralized system roadmaps with enterprise architecture strategy.
- Provide hands-on technical leadership and mentorship to Integration, RPA, and AI Engineering teams.
- Engage VP- and C-level stakeholders, translate complex architectural concepts into business language, and drive alignment across decentralized teams.
Requirements
- Extensive experience defining and governing enterprise architecture in complex, matrixed organizations.
- Experience leading architecture strategy across ERP, CRM, CPQ, billing, and financial platforms.
- Deep technical experience in integration, automation, and AI, with the ability to contribute to architecture and technical problem-solving discussions.
- Expert knowledge of data modeling, integration architecture patterns, API design, and microservices architecture.
- Experience designing integration strategies for operational and analytical use cases.
- Experience establishing and leading architecture review boards or similar governance frameworks.
- Demonstrated success reducing shadow IT and software sprawl through software governance, portfolio rationalization, and roadmap alignment.
- Deep understanding of SOX compliance, internal controls, and security architecture for business applications.
- Experience designing audit-ready integration and automation patterns.
- Exceptional communication and influencing skills.
The Enterprise Architecture team designs, governs, and evolves GitLab's internal technology landscape. The team includes architects and engineers across integration, RPA, and AI, operates asynchronously, and partners with system owners in Sales, Finance, Customer Success, and Operations.
