About proficiency levels:
- 1-2 — basic awareness. Minimal hands-on experience, and a rudimentary understanding of the technology's purpose;
- 3-6 — daily use. Comfortable and regular usage, capable of handling common tasks and challenges related to the technology;
- 7-9 — you are an expert, you can teach others, you know all the pitfalls and tricks;
- 10 — exceptional knowledge, comprehensive understanding, and adeptness in all aspects of the technology, including advanced problem-solving. Think twice before claiming or demanding such level.

About Stripe
Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform for businesses. Millions of companies use Stripe to accept payments, grow revenue, and accelerate new business opportunities. Stripe's mission is to increase the GDP of the internet.
About the Team
Web Presence and Platform (WPP) designs, builds, and operates Stripe's public web presence, including stripe.com and other sites that may be customers' first impression of Stripe. WPP creates experiences that help customers understand Stripe's platform, shares Stripe's ideas and expertise, and drives adoption. The team also builds the systems and operational foundations that make Stripe's websites fast, stable, and easy to evolve.
WPP brings together design, engineering, operations, and business strategy to create useful, compelling experiences and enable teams across Stripe to benefit from shared systems and capabilities.
Responsibilities
The Design Systems pod builds and stewards Helm, the shared design system behind stripe.com. The team creates components, patterns, tools, and guidance that help WPP teams deliver expressive, consistent, and high-quality web experiences at scale.
As an engineer on the Design Systems pod, you will:
- Design and build polished, accessible, and performant React components and patterns that express Stripe's visual language across stripe.com.
- Partner with designers and engineers to shape component behavior, APIs, responsive states, interaction details, and design-token architecture.
- Maintain a high bar for design-code parity and component quality through documentation, accessibility and visual-regression testing, production validation, and in-context review.
- Help workstream teams decide when to compose existing capabilities, extend the system, or keep an implementation local, and lead the upstreaming of broadly reusable work.
- Improve how designers, engineers, content authors, and agents discover, understand, and adopt Helm through clear guidance, examples, tooling, and responsive collaboration.
- Turn Stripe's visual direction into reusable, production-ready capabilities across responsive layouts, interaction states, accessibility needs, performance constraints, content models, and locales.
Requirements
Minimum Requirements
- 5+ years of relevant frontend or design engineering experience building production web experiences or the shared systems and tooling behind them.
- Experience building and maintaining a production design system or shared component library, including evolving it through real-world use.
- Proficiency with React, TypeScript, HTML, and CSS, with experience taking interactive, responsive work from design through production.
- Experience using AI-assisted development tools as a regular part of software engineering work, with sound judgment about validating their output and maintaining code, product, and security quality.
- Experience designing flexible component APIs, primitives, tokens, and composition models that give skilled practitioners meaningful control while preserving accessibility and maintainability.
- Strong visual and interaction-design judgment, along with the communication skills to collaborate with experienced designers and engineers on ambiguous system-level tradeoffs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience building expressive, brand-forward web experiences where consistency must coexist with differentiated art direction.
- Familiarity with CMS-driven experiences, structured content, localization, or other constraints involved in supporting a large global website.
- Experience with tools and practices that connect design and code, such as Figma libraries, design tokens, Code Connect, component documentation, or visual-regression testing.
- Experience migrating consumers between design systems or evolving shared components while maintaining compatibility across existing production surfaces.
