Anthropic is building reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems and the Safeguards team protects users and deployments from misuse and other risks. The Safeguards team builds protections for frontier models and product surfaces (Claude.ai, 1P API, external cloud providers). As a Product Manager on the Safeguards team you will own ideation, design, development, and deployment of safeguards systems and product UX, working closely with research and product teams to develop detections, evals, interventions, and tools to measure and mitigate deployment and user risks.

Responsibilities

  • Determine how to build safety-by-design upstream and leverage downstream defenses for Anthropic’s frontier models and AI products across surfaces (Claude.ai, 1P API, external cloud providers).
  • Write safety evals and communicate externally about safety.
  • Drive impact via ruthless prioritization: define problems, present solution options, weigh business & technical tradeoffs, and produce clear MVP vs. ideal-state requirements.
  • Align and collaborate with policy, enforcement, research, engineering, and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Understand the AI landscape and plan mitigations for deployment risks from increasingly powerful models and determined adversaries.
  • Lead development of metrics to understand area performance, blind spots, and inform future project planning.

Requirements

  • 5+ years in product management with emphasis on fast problem understanding, building roadmaps with tractable progress, and working with data, detection & interventions, infrastructure & tools, and/or evals.
  • Deep technical expertise in development, deployment, and measurement of safeguards systems; ability to make technical tradeoffs and work across policy experts, AI/ML research engineers, and software engineering teams.
  • Strong user understanding of product usage and safeguards concerns, and ability to design appropriate solutions.
  • Demonstrated experience building product and engineering strategy across multiple cross-functional teams in rapidly changing spaces.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and building metrics to evaluate risks, system performance, and user impact.
  • Experience planning, building, launching, and measuring new products/systems in a zero-to-one environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; able to articulate complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Evidence of sound judgment and decision making in ambiguous situations; creative thinking about risks and benefits of new technologies.

Logistics

  • Annual salary: $305,000 - $385,000 USD
  • Minimum education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience
