Details
Grafana Labs is hiring a remote Software Engineer for its new Foundations “Metal” squad. The squad will build and provision storage, networking, and Kubernetes clusters in new environments, initially using physical hardware. It will provide a Kubernetes control plane and underlying resources outside public cloud environments for the wider Engineering organization.
Grafana Cloud processes millions of metrics, log lines, and traces per second from customer environments through a highly available, low-latency platform. The Internal Engineering Platform provides application engineers with the tools, systems, and Kubernetes clusters required to build, deploy, and operate their workloads.
Responsibilities
- Manage the physical “Metal” environment from bare metal through Kubernetes.
- Manage cluster networking components, including load balancing, NAT, DNS, CNIs, cross-cluster communication, routing protocols, and networking architecture.
- Manage scheduling and autoscaling.
- Maintain Crossplane compositions and Terraform modules for cloud service provider resources commonly used by Grafana Cloud teams.
- Manage versioning and compatibility for Crossplane, Terraform Core, and their providers.
- Work with Grafana Cloud application teams to understand their needs and invest in the right platform capabilities.
- Own the full lifecycle of code, including design documentation, developer feedback, and integration testing.
- Participate in an on-call rotation.
Requirements
- Experience working with distributed systems.
- Experience developing and operating software.
- Datacenter experience.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a remote-first, distributed company.
- Willingness to learn and grow.
- Experience with or interest in Go, Python, and Shell.
- Experience working with Kubernetes and platform engineering concepts.
- A holistic approach to development, including attention to both broader architecture and implementation details.
Bonus Qualifications
- Experience with Cluster-API, Tinkerbell, Talos, and/or Ceph.
- Experience working in or contributing to open-source or community-based projects.
- Experience with cloud service providers such as AWS, GCP, and Azure, including EKS, GKE, and AKS.
- Experience operating and managing Kubernetes workloads.
- Experience with Tanka and Jsonnet.
- Familiarity with Kubernetes scheduling and projects such as Karpenter.
- Experience with Terraform and/or Crossplane.
- Enjoyment of programming in Go and building tools, utilities, and exporters.
