Details

Grafana Labs is hiring a Senior Platform Engineer for its new Foundations “Metal” squad. The team will build and provision storage, networking, and Kubernetes clusters in new environments, starting with physical hardware. The squad will provide a Kubernetes control plane and underlying resources outside public cloud for the rest of Engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the physical “Metal” environment, from bare metal to Kubernetes.
  • Manage cluster networking components, including load balancing, NAT, DNS, CNIs, cross-cluster communication, routing protocols, and architecture.
  • Manage scheduling and autoscaling.
  • Maintain Crossplane compositions and Terraform modules for common CSP resources.
  • Manage versioning and compatibility for Crossplane, Terraform Core, and their providers.
  • Work with Grafana Cloud application teams to understand their needs and invest in the right platform capabilities.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation.
  • Own the full life cycle of platform code, including design documentation, developer feedback, and integration testing.

Requirements

  • Experience with datacenters.
  • Experience operating code and working across development and operations.
  • Interest in distributed systems.
  • Comfortable working in a remote-first, highly distributed company.
  • Collaborative, respectful, and consensus-oriented communication style.
  • The ability to approach development holistically and work across the full software life cycle.
  • Experience with Go, Python, and Shell is relevant to the Platform team.

Bonus Points

  • Experience with Cluster-API, Tinkerbell, Talos, and/or Ceph.
  • Experience working in or contributing to open-source or community-based projects.
  • Experience with multiple cloud service providers, especially AWS, GCP, and Azure, and their managed Kubernetes services: EKS, GKE, and AKS.
  • Experience operating and managing Kubernetes workloads.
  • Experience with Tanka and Jsonnet.
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes scheduling and projects such as Karpenter.
  • Experience with Terraform and/or Crossplane.
  • Enjoyment of programming in Go to build tools, utilities, and exporters.

Compensation

The UK compensation range is £91,755–£110,106 per year. Actual compensation may vary based on level, experience, and skillset. The role includes Restricted Stock Units (RSUs).
