Details
We are looking for a highly motivated Application Security Engineer with a strong understanding of network security to strengthen ABN AMRO’s Web Application Firewall (WAF) and API security capabilities. The role is part of the CISO Cyber Defence department and focuses on application-layer security across the bank’s IT ecosystem.
Responsibilities
- Analyze findings and real-time telemetry from API security platforms.
- Translate complex vulnerability findings into clear security risks and practical, developer-friendly remediation guidance.
- Collaborate closely with development, platform, and feature teams to resolve vulnerabilities and build security into products from the start.
- Review API architectures, including emerging AI and Model Context Protocol (MCP) platform security.
- Tune Web Application Firewalls (WAF) and API and AI security platforms.
- Assist with firewall change approvals.
- Help integrate application-facing network security controls across the bank’s IT environment.
- Contribute to continuous improvement in an Agile/Scrum team and support data-driven decision-making.
Requirements
- Excellent communication and collaborative skills.
- Hands-on experience with dedicated API security tooling, such as Salt, Noname/Akamai, or Sequence.
- Experience with modern WAF solutions.
- Ability to inspect API traffic, evaluate API specifications, and secure application endpoints.
- Experience advising development teams and providing practical remediation steps.
- Understanding of enterprise network security architecture and hybrid cloud environments.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Azure and VMware.
- Familiarity with security frameworks including NIST, CIS Controls, and MITRE ATT&CK.
- Scripting capabilities in Python and/or PowerShell.
- Analytical problem-solving skills and a continuous-learning mindset.
- Ability to work proactively in an Agile/Scrum environment.
- English is the main working language.
Working Environment
You will join ABN AMRO’s CISO department, which has approximately 500 global staff. The Cyber Defence department has around 150 employees across seven sub-departments. The role is based in Amstelveen, near Amsterdam, and offers opportunities to work with new tools, develop technical and soft skills, and grow within an international team.
