About the Team
Stripe Terminal helps users extend their online presence to the physical world. The Terminal team’s mission is to make it as easy for businesses to accept in-person payments as the Stripe API has done for online payments. Terminal supports use cases including retail experiences, pop-up stores, and mobile points of sale.
The Product Manager will lead and shape the software platform powering Stripe Terminal’s device portfolio. Working with engineering partners, this role will design, build, and launch device software capabilities while working with hardware experts to develop a multi-year strategy focused on scalability, reliability, usability, and market differentiation.
The role involves working with users ranging from large platforms to small startups, as well as external technology partners, to understand user needs and market trends. The role will focus on stability, scalability, and expanding the product while delivering high-quality in-person payment experiences.
Responsibilities
- Set a motivating multi-year vision for device software in partnership with the Hardware team.
- Break the vision into measurable milestones for the Terminal OS Platform Team and Firmware team.
- Create buy-in, develop roadmaps and OKRs, and navigate product trade-offs.
- Partner with software and hardware engineers to understand the technology supporting the devices and build experiences involving device boot-up, software updates, AOSP, firmware, applications, device security, software and device performance, connectivity, and device accessories.
- Research, document, and understand Terminal customer needs.
- Build empathy with end users and understand the differentiation they seek for their merchants.
- Research the competitive landscape and translate findings into differentiating product features.
- Collaborate with the Partnerships team on a roadmap for third-party hardware partnerships and communicate the business value of these partnerships to Terminal and Stripe leadership.
- Use metrics and analytics to measure product success.
- Define product requirements, guide prioritization, and support development sequencing decisions.
- Participate in sprint-planning rituals to deliver against requirements and the overall roadmap.
- Use technical knowledge and experience to support technical trade-off decisions.
Requirements
- 8+ years of product management experience or equivalent.
- Demonstrated success and strong execution in building and sustaining scalable technology products.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively, engage in productive debate, and communicate complex concepts clearly.
- Proven stakeholder-management experience, including executive communications, handling escalations, and advocating for continued product investment.
- Experience working on products with developer interfaces, including app deployment, APIs, or SDKs.
- Hardware or hardware-related product experience is a plus.
- Technically adept systems thinker, ideally with a Computer Science degree or equivalent experience, or experience working as a software engineer.
- Willingness to travel to Asia, including Hong Kong or Taiwan.
Nice-to-Have Experience
Experience in one or two of the following areas is desirable:
- Mobile device management.
- Android operating system internals.
- Hardware build and lifecycle management.
- Payments and/or e-commerce.
- Successfully building and launching 0-to-1 products.
