Reddit is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to build the next generation of its media web experience. The role focuses on the technical components used to deliver video and audio content, including the web media player and the APIs that power it. You will draw on patterns from leading streaming platforms to build seamless, low-latency playback experiences and interactive tools for creators and users.

Responsibilities

  • Work cross-functionally with product, design, and engineering teams to execute product and business strategy and build new products and features.
  • Contribute to the full development lifecycle, including technical design, development, testing, experimentation, analysis, and launch.
  • Design and implement end-to-end full-stack solutions, optimizing web UI components for the media player using React and TypeScript and backend APIs using Go and Python.
  • Move quickly while balancing development quality and reliability.
  • Review code and design documents and provide feedback on product specifications and design mocks.
  • Collaborate with client and platform engineers to improve media performance globally.
  • Contribute to engineering standards, improve developer workflows, recommend best practices, and mentor junior engineers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, a similar technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 5 years of professional software development experience in one or more general-purpose programming languages, including Go, Python, Ruby, Java, or C++.
  • Strong proficiency in modern web development technologies, including JavaScript, React, Next.js, and TypeScript.
  • Experience translating complex UI/UX designs into scalable web applications.
  • Experience with GraphQL, REST, HTTP, gRPC, and basic Thrift, along with the ability to design and implement maintainable APIs.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills with the ability to deliver projects on schedule.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to discuss complex topics with technical and non-technical audiences in a fully remote environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong product thinking and experience connecting technical media streaming metrics, such as quality of experience and buffering rates, with user-facing features including media controls, analytics dashboards, and interactive video.
  • Familiarity with HTTP Live Streaming, MPEG-DASH, MP4, and other streaming protocols.
  • Familiarity with video compression standards including H.264, H.265/HEVC, VP9, and AV1.
  • Curiosity and commitment to keeping up with advancements in video compression technologies through conferences, research papers, and industry trends.
  • Familiarity with background data fetching.

The base salary range for this position is $190,000–$267,000 USD. Final offers may vary based on skills, experience, and relevant credentials.
